Computer terminologies and abbreviations are frequently asked in Bank PO and other bank exams .
Short for Basic Input/Output System, the BIOS (pronounced bye-oss) is a ROM chip located on all motherboards that allows you to access and set up your computer system at the most basic level. In the picture below, is an example of what a BIOS chip may look like on your computer motherboard. In this example, this is a picture of an early AMIBIOS, a type of BIOS manufactured by the AMI. Another good example of a BIOS manufacturer is Phoenix.
Alternatively referred to as a web browser, abrowser is a software program created as a simplified means to present and explore content on the World Wide Web. These pieces of content, including pictures, videos, and web pages, are connected using hyperlinksand classified with Uniform Recourse Identifiers (URLs).
Binary is a base 2 number system invented byGottfried Leibniz where numeric values are represented by different combinations of 0 and 1, also known as OFF or ON. The primary language of computers, binary is still used in today's machines because it's a simple and elegant design. Binary's 0 and 1 method is efficient at detecting an electrical signal's off or on state, or magnetic poles in media like hard drives. It is also the most efficient way to control logic circuits.
Alternatively referred to as a line topology, a bus topology is a network setup in which each computer and network device are connected to a single cable orbackbone. The following sections contain both the advantages and disadvantages of using a bus topology with your devices.
When referring to a computer, the bus also known as the address bus, data bus,or local bus is a data connection between two or more devices connected to the computer. For example, a bus enables a computer processor to communicate with the memory or a video card to communicate with the memory.
When referring to typing or writing, block letters refers to writing or typing that is printed and not written in cursive or with any joined letters. Many forms and teachers will request that a form or assignment be written in block letters to make it easier to read. The picture is an example of block letters compared to cursive letters. As can be seen, block letters are much easier to read.
A byte is a term first coined by Werner Buchholz in1956 and later became more of a standard thanks to Bob Bemer and others. A byte is data equal to either seven or eight bits depending if it needs error correction (parity). You can think of a byte as one letter, for example, the letter 'h' is one byte or eight bits and the word 'hope' as four bytes or 32 bits (4*8).
Alternatively referred to as bootstrapping, bootloader, or boot program, abootstrap loader is a program that resides in the computer's EPROM, ROM, or othernon-volatile memory. It is automatically executed by the processor when turning on the computer. The bootstrap loader reads the hard drives boot sector to continue the process of loading the computer's operating system. The term bootstrap comes from the old phrase "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps."
Lines of different widths and sizes representing data, that when read determine what the scanned object is. Barcodes are often used to help organize and index information or prices about an object. Barcodes used by the U.S. postal service that helps speed the delivery of mail is another perfect example of how a barcode could be used. The picture is an example of what a barcode of an address.
Alternatively referred to as boot up, booting is the process of powering on a computer and getting into the operating system. During the boot process, the computer will perform a self-diagnostic, also known as a POST and load necessary drivers and programs that help the computer and devices communicate. As your computer is booting, you may see a screen similar to the example picture below.
