: The Reserve Bank of India raised the pitch in the debate over the future of state-run banks saying they should be freed from social obligations and allowed to function on purely business terms, which could be far more beneficial to the economy rather than treating them as a ward of the state.
"The frictions that hinder the performance of PSBs need to be eliminated and they should be allowed to work on commercial principles," said RBI deputy governor R Gandhi.
